Kooksoondang, whose name means House of Good Yeast, was founded in 1952 by Bae Sang-myeon at the Hoengseong brewery in Gangwon province, about an hour east of Seoul. It also makes Baekseju, a ginseng and herb rice wine.
Makgeolli is a cloudy Korean rice wine. The brewery uses Seolgang rice, nuruk (a grain-based starter) and spring water. This version is flavored with grape juice and green grape flavor, sweetened in part with aspartame and sucralose per the label, and lightly carbonated. It's 3% alcohol and closed with a screw cap.
Dan Murphy's describes the flavor as fresh white grape. UK importer Waso notes that it is lightly sparkling and can be mixed with soda.
Against Kooksoondang Strawberry Makgeolli, the White Grape trades berry for fresh grape at the same 3% strength; for a grape-flavored makgeolli with Korean barbecue, choose the White Grape.
Serve it cold. Shake the bottle gently before pouring to mix the rice sediment, and open slowly since it's fizzy. It goes with pajeon, fried chicken and spicy stews.
