Korbel Champagne Cellars was founded in 1882 by the Korbel brothers in Guerneville, Sonoma County. The Heck family has owned it since 1954, and Gary Heck is president and owner.
The label reads "Korbel California Champagne Brut," a name grandfathered under the 2006 US–EU wine agreement. It's a blend of Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, French Colombard and Pinot Noir, picked about two weeks earlier than grapes for still wine. The base wine ferments in stainless steel, and the second fermentation happens in the bottle, the méthode champenoise. Korbel gives a dosage of about 10 grams per liter, for a medium-dry finish, and 12% alcohol.
The winery describes citrus and cinnamon aromas with orange, lime, vanilla and a hint of strawberry. Brown-Forman's notes add apple, pear and white peach.
Against Gruet Methode Champenoise Brut, Korbel is softer and cheaper; for mimosas and big parties, choose Korbel.
Korbel suggests it for mimosas, shellfish and fried foods. We stock the 187ml, 750ml and 1.5L sizes.
