Petite Petit comes from Michael David Winery, the Phillips family's winery in Lodi. It's now part of the winery's Freakshow range, and its circus-themed label was redesigned to match.
The name comes from its two grapes: Petite Sirah and Petit Verdot, listed by a retailer as 85% and 15%. Both are deeply colored, tannic grapes, so this is a dark, full-bodied red. The bottle on our listing carries no vintage, and the winery doesn't publish oak details.
The winery calls it a full-bodied, "whopper style" wine with dark fruit, vanilla and a coating mouthfeel, and its notes for a recent vintage add plum, boysenberry, black cherry, blackberry compote and cacao nib.
Against Bogle Petite Sirah, Petite Petit adds Petit Verdot and is bigger and plusher; for a showstopper red under $20, choose Petite Petit.
Pour it with barbecue ribs, a cheeseburger or smoked brisket. It's a bold wine, so open it a little ahead. Give it a few minutes in the glass and it softens nicely.
