Bruce and Barbara Neyers founded Neyers Vineyards in 1992, and the winery is still family-owned. It sits in Chiles Valley, in the hills east of St. Helena, and buys grapes from top growers, including the Sangiacomo family in Carneros.
Neyers makes its Chardonnay with indigenous yeasts. The grapes are pressed as whole clusters and fermented in 60-gallon French oak barrels, 25% new, made from wood air-dried for three years. In the 2021, the fruit came from the Yamakawa, Green Acres and El Novillero vineyards, and the wine went through its malolactic fermentation naturally. The 2022 is 13.6% alcohol.
Retailers quoting the winemaker describe a pale gold wine with pineapple, mango, lemon and grapefruit, vanilla and spice, a medium body, creamy texture and fresh acidity.
Against Rombauer, Neyers is more restrained, with less new oak and native yeasts; for a Burgundian-style Carneros white, choose Neyers.
Serve it lightly chilled with roast chicken, scallops or a mushroom dish.
