Grange is the flagship Shiraz of Penfolds, part of Treasury Wine Estates, and Bin 95 is its bin number. Wine.com calls it a Heritage Icon of South Australia.
The 2009 is 98% Shiraz and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon. Wine Advocate reports the fruit as 84% Barossa and 8% McLaren Vale, with the rest from Clare Valley and the Magill Estate. Fermentation finished in barrel, and the wine then spent 18 months in 100% new American oak hogsheads. Retailers list it at 14.5% alcohol.
Penfolds' notes, quoted by Dan Murphy's, describe racy red fruit, red liquorice, aniseed, panforte, malt and dried fig, then mocha, cola and plum with firm, savoury tannins. Wine & Spirits calls it dynamic and balanced to age for decades.
Against Two Hands Lily's Garden Shiraz 2017, Grange is a multi-regional icon in new American oak; for a landmark Australian Shiraz to mark an occasion, choose Grange.
Wine Advocate gives a drinking window of 2018 to 2035 and beyond. Decant it ahead and serve with rib roast.
