Silk & Spice Red Blend 750ml

Silk & Spice is made by Sogrape, Portugal's largest wine company, and imported by its US arm, Evaton. The name recalls the Portuguese spice route of 1498, and winemaker Diogo Sepúlveda blends grapes from across Portugal.

The blend changes by vintage. The 2023 is Touriga Nacional and Syrah at 30% each, Alicante Bouschet at 25% and Tinta Roriz at 15%. Each grape is vinified separately, then the wine rests about a year in tank, with no oak. The tech sheets show about 15 grams of sugar per liter, so it's off-dry and smooth.

Sogrape describes deep ruby with ripe, cooked black fruit, vanilla and mocha, and a rich, full palate with a smooth, long finish.

Against Apothic Red, Silk & Spice is made from Portuguese grapes without oak; for something different at the same price, choose Silk & Spice.

Serve it at 15 to 17°C. The tech sheet suggests grilled meat, pizza and lasagne.
