Pessimist began as an offshoot of DAOU, the Paso Robles winery owned by Treasury Wine Estates. In 2026 Treasury moved it into a new range called Frame of Mind, alongside Optimist and Realist, so newer bottles may carry that name.
The 2023 is a Paso Robles blend of 69% Petite Sirah, 18% Syrah, 11% Zinfandel and 2% Lagrein. It's led by Petite Sirah rather than Cabernet, which gives it deep color and big, dark fruit. It's 14.9% alcohol.
The winemaker's notes describe blueberry, boysenberry and plum with smoky truffle, roasted coffee and lavender, then a plush palate of cherry, huckleberry and cassis, with fennel, olive and spice on a silky finish.
Against The Prisoner, Pessimist is darker and more savory, and costs about half as much; for a bold red at under $20, choose Pessimist.
Pair it with smoked brisket, grilled sausages or a mushroom burger.
