Tormaresca is the Puglia estate of the Antinori family. Torcicoda comes from older vineyards at Tenuta Maìme near San Pietro Vernotico in Salento. Tormaresca says Torcicoda was the first Apulian wine to make Wine Spectator's Top 100.
It's 100% Primitivo. The winery picks the grapes slightly over-ripe, destems them and ferments in stainless steel at no more than 28°C, with about 13 days of maceration. The wine then ages about 18 months before release, in French and Hungarian oak barriques. It's 15% alcohol.
The winery describes an intense ruby color with violet hints, red fruit, black cherry, plum, licorice, vanilla and tobacco, and a soft, generous, well-structured palate with elegant tannins. Falstaff notes a dusty, earthy nose, juicy blackberry and blueberry, and firm tannins.
Against The Prisoner Saldo Zinfandel, Torcicoda is single-estate Primitivo from Puglia with barrique aging; for a structured Italian red that can still cellar, choose Torcicoda.
German retailer Superiore.de suggests serving it at 16 to 18°C and cellaring it past 2030. Try it with grilled sausages or braised lamb.
