Castello Banfi is a Montalcino estate whose wines are brought to the US by Banfi Wines USA of Melville, New York. This is its flagship estate Brunello, separate from the single-vineyard Vigna Marrucheto and Poggio alle Mura bottlings.
Brunello di Montalcino DOCG is made from Sangiovese, here grown on hillsides with Pliocene clay-sand soils and gray-blue clays. Fermentation ran at 25 to 30°C in Banfi's hybrid French oak and steel Horizon tanks, and the wine aged at least two years in oak: 80% in large French casks and 20% in 350-liter barriques. It's 14.5% alcohol.
Banfi describes ruby with garnet glints, currant, blackberry, licorice and pipe tobacco, soft polished tannins and lively acidity. Wine Advocate calls it open-knit and accessible.
Against Banfi Rosso di Montalcino 2024, the Brunello is the estate's long-aged flagship; for a bottle to lay down, choose the Brunello.
Serve it at 16 to 18°C with red meat, game or aged cheese. Wine Spectator suggests drinking it from 2029 to 2045.
