Castello Banfi is a major estate in Montalcino, Tuscany. Its Rosso di Montalcino DOC comes from the estate's hillside vineyards, planted on marine Pliocene clay-sand, calcareous and gray-blue clay soils.
The 2024 is 100% Sangiovese. It was fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel at 25 to 30°C, then aged 12 months in French oak, in 60 to 90 hectoliter casks and 350-liter barriques. Banfi says the hot July and August of 2024, followed by a cool, rainy start to September, gave fresher wines with lower alcohol. It is 13.5% alcohol.
The winery describes bright ruby color with blackberry and ripe cherry, floral notes, and touches of vanilla, tobacco and licorice. It calls the palate ample, concentrated and harmonious, with good acidity and long persistence.
Against Argiano Rosso di Montalcino 2024, Banfi costs less and spends a full year in French oak; for an oak-framed Rosso to drink tonight, choose Banfi.
Banfi recommends serving it at 16 to 18°C with game and medium-aged cheeses.
