Beckmen Vineyards is a family-owned winery in Los Olivos run by a father and two of his sons. K&L reports that it was founded in 1994 and that its wines come almost entirely from two estate vineyards: the Thomas and Judith Beckmen Estate Vineyard in the Los Olivos District and Purisima Mountain Vineyard in Ballard Canyon.
The winery calls itself the first biodynamically farmed vineyard in Santa Barbara County, and it makes Rhône-style wines from estate fruit in small lots. This Santa Barbara County Syrah is the entry point to its Syrahs, with the single-vineyard Purisima Mountain bottlings as the step up. It's 14.5% alcohol.
ABC Fine Wine & Spirits describes it as medium-bodied, with blueberry, blackberry and mocha and a hint of spice on the finish.
Against Robert Oatley Signature Series McLaren Vale Shiraz 2020, the Beckmen is the medium-bodied California Syrah from a biodynamic estate; for a lighter, more savory style of the grape, choose the Beckmen.
Serve it slightly cool, around 60 to 65°F, with grilled lamb, smoked brisket or mushroom dishes.
