Aransat is made by Borgo Savaian, the family estate of Stefano Bastiani in Cormòns, in Friuli's Collio area, now run by three generations. Aransat is Friulian for orange.
The producer's technical sheet lists only traditional white Friulian varieties. The Guyot-trained vines average 20 years old. The producer gives up to 60 days of skin contact at 18°C, fermentation with yeasts selected at the winery, malolactic that happens on its own in spring, and aging mostly in steel with a small part in third-use barriques. It's bottled as Vino Bianco, without a DOC, and sealed with a cork; the importer adds that it's unfiltered.
The producer describes a deep yellow turning to orange, with ripe fruit, apricot and vanilla, very intense, and complex yet surprisingly easy to drink.
Against The Vice Orange of Gewürztraminer, Aransat is the Italian, mostly steel-aged take and costs about $5 less; for a Collio skin-contact white under $20, choose Aransat.
Serve it at about 15°C, a little warmer than most whites. The producer suggests spicy dishes, fish with sauces and flavorful cheeses.
