Suscol Springs is Cakebread's estate vineyard in the cooler southern end of Napa Valley, with vines planted among rocky outcrops above the valley floor. Cakebread introduced it as an estate reserve Cabernet.
Stephanie Jacobs made the 2018: 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot. It was harvested at night from late September to mid-October, double hand-sorted and cold-soaked, then aged 22 months in French oak, 70% new. It's 14.7% alcohol.
The winery describes blackberry, boysenberry, violet and a hint of gravel, then black cherry, fresh acidity, firm tannins and a hint of minerality.
It's the cool-climate wine among the Cakebread single vineyards on our shelf. For the warmer bench style, choose Vine Hill Ranch.
James Suckling suggested drinking from 2023, so it's ready now. Decant it for an hour and serve with roast lamb.
