Cakebread Cellars Vine Hill Ranch Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 750ml

Vine Hill Ranch sits on the western benchland of Oakville, with deep loamy soils and afternoon shade from the mountains. Cakebread has worked with the grower there since 1982.

This is Cakebread's single-vineyard Cabernet from the ranch, made separately from the house's Napa Valley blend and priced well above it. The family-owned Rutherford winery ferments and ages the vineyard's blocks on their own before bottling them as one wine.

Cakebread describes the Vine Hill Ranch style as intense and full-bodied, with blackberry, boysenberry, dark chocolate and stony notes.

Choose the 2016 for more bottle age, or the 2017 for a slightly younger bottle.

Ten years on, it should be opening up. Decant it for an hour and serve it with lamb chops, braised short ribs or a char-broiled steak.
