Château de Beaucastel is the Perrin family's estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape: 110 hectares in a single block in the north of the appellation, on rolled pebbles over clay, sand and limestone, farmed organically for more than 50 years. Hommage à Jacques Perrin honors the man who pioneered organic farming there in the 1960s and biodynamics from 1974.
Unusually for Châteauneuf, Hommage is built on Mourvèdre. Robert Parker's review describes the 2010 as Mourvèdre-led at about 60%, and one retailer gives the rest as 20% Syrah with Counoise and Grenache.
Robert Parker called the 2010 a spectacular, world-class wine built for 30 to 50 years of cellaring. In 2015 Jeb Dunnuck, writing for Wine Advocate, found it tight, dense and backward, while Vinous, tasting it in 2024, wrote that the best may be yet to come.
Against Vieux Télégraphe La Crau 2021, Hommage is a Mourvèdre-led rarity with well over a decade in bottle; for a mature showpiece Châteauneuf, choose Hommage.
Stand it upright, decant it off its sediment, and serve with roast lamb, game or truffle dishes.
