Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe Chateauneuf-du-Pape La Crau 2021 750ml

Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe farms 50 hectares on the stony Plateau de la Crau, where Bédarrides, Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Courthézon meet. Rolled pebbles cover the soils, and the vines average about 70 years old. This is the estate's flagship red, and La Crau on the label names the plateau.

James Suckling reports the 2021 as 70% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 15% Mourvèdre. The grapes are hand-harvested, fermented in steel and wooden vats, aged 20 to 22 months in large French oak foudres, and bottled unfined and unfiltered.

James Suckling praises a very elegant finish that teases you with its subtle nuances. Jeb Dunnuck describes a classic style in its ripe red and black berry fruits, and Wine Advocate calls it medium to full-bodied, layered and textured.

Against La Nerthe Cuvée des Cadettes 2012, Vieux Télégraphe is younger, Grenache-led and raised in large foudres rather than new barrels; for a Châteauneuf to cellar, choose Vieux Télégraphe.

Jeb Dunnuck gives it 15 years of longevity. Serve it at about 17 °C with roast lamb or game.
