Bodegas Borsao Tres Picos Garnacha 2023 750ml

Bodegas Borsao is based in Borja, in the province of Zaragoza, with roots going back to 1958. Its US importer, Winebow, says Tres Picos was first made in 2000 and calls it the first 100% Garnacha wine made in Spain.

It's 100% Garnacha from the DO Campo de Borja, grown in old mountain vineyards of 35 to 60 years at 600 to 700 meters, on clay-limestone, stony and silty soils. After a 20- to 25-day maceration, it ferments in stainless steel at 25 to 30°C, then spends five months in new French Bordeaux barrels. The 2023 has 1.8 g/l of residual sugar, so it's dry.

The winery describes an intense cherry-red color with purple hints, ripe red fruit and floral aromas, and blackberry, plum, leather and vanilla on the palate with sweet tannins.

Against Gulp Hablo Garnacha, Tres Picos is old-vine mountain Garnacha with a stint in new French oak; for a richer bottle with grilled meat, choose Tres Picos.

Borsao suggests serving it at 17°C, with rice dishes, pasta and barbecue.
