E. Guigal Cotes du Rhone 2022 750ml

E. Guigal is a Rhône Valley house, and its Côtes du Rhône Red belongs to the range it calls The Collection.

The 2022 is 50% Syrah, 40% Grenache and 10% Mourvèdre, so it's led by Syrah. Guigal ferments it at controlled temperatures with long skin contact and ages it 18 months in large foudres. The vines average 25 years old, on limestone, granite, pebbles and alluvium. The US importer, Vintus, notes that 2022 was one of the hottest and driest Rhône seasons since 1950. It's 14.5% alcohol.

Guigal describes a deep, shiny red with fresh red berries and spice, full, round and racy, with smooth tannins and a long finish. Jeb Dunnuck finds blackberries, pepper and garrigue, and Wine Advocate calls it remarkably dense for the vintage.

Against Perrin Côtes du Rhône Réserve Rouge 2023, Guigal is the Syrah-led, foudre-aged Côtes du Rhône; for a weeknight Rhône red with more Syrah spice, choose Guigal.

Guigal suggests serving it at 16 to 18°C and gives it about eight years of ageing potential.
