The 2021 is Groth's 40th vintage of Oakville Cabernet, and the label reproduces the original 1982 design with a commemorative emblem. It honors co-founder Judy Groth.
Dennis and Judy Groth bought their Oakville vineyard in 1981; Suzanne Groth now runs the family winery. The 2021 was Ted Henry's first official vintage as director of winegrowing. It's 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, all from Oakville, picked at night, sorted by hand and aged 19 months in French oak, half of it new. It's 14.2% alcohol.
The winery describes blackberry, graham cracker crust, cocoa nib, hibiscus and graphite, then sour cherry, raspberry and black currant, with firm tannins that turn velvety on the finish.
For a classic Oakville Cabernet with a story, this is the one to buy as a gift. Mondavi The Estates is the To Kalon alternative.
Decant it for an hour. Groth suggests herb-crusted roast meats, grilled portobello or Bolognese.
