Wine Spectator ranked this wine No. 6 in its Top 100 of 2022. The Estates is Robert Mondavi's Oakville Cabernet, renamed from the Oakville bottling starting with 2018, and it comes mostly from the famous To Kalon vineyard.

Part of the fruit came from young, replanted To Kalon parcels, farmed organically. The 2019 is 85% Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and a little Malbec and Merlot. It was fermented with native yeasts, aged 20 months in mostly new French oak and bottled unfiltered.

Wine Spectator noted violet, anise and sweet bay leaf, with boysenberry and blackberry and a graphite finish.

It's the To Kalon wine below Mondavi's Reserve, and a big step up from the Napa Valley Cabernet. Buy it for a celebration or a collector.

Drink it now through the mid-2030s. Decant it for an hour and serve it with a rib roast.

"What was previously released as the Oakville Cabernet, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Estates Tier comes all from To Kalon and was fermented in oak tanks and aged in 96% new French oak. The blend is 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and the rest Malbec. Ripe black fruits, smoked herbs, graphite, and even a touch of minerality define the bouquet, and it’s full-bodied, concentrated, and beautifully textured on the palate. Drink it over the coming two decades."
