Before it was a wine farm, Excelsior in South Africa's Robertson valley bred racehorses and ostriches. The De Wet family has farmed it since 1859.
Cabernet Sauvignon is the estate's most planted grape. The vines are kept short of water, which keeps the berries small and the flavor concentrated. In the current vintage, a little Petit Verdot goes into the blend and part of the wine spends nine months in French and American oak, with the rest kept in tank.
The winery describes ripe blackcurrant and dried herbs with spicy oak, a smooth palate, ripe tannins and a long finish.
At this price it's one of the most honest Cabernets we sell: real estate fruit, not a bulk blend. Buy it by the case for parties; for one special bottle under $20, look at our other wines under $20.
Serve it cool, around 60°F. The estate's own chef pairs it with a medium sirloin steak, and it's good with a weeknight burger too.
All our Cabernet Sauvignon is in one place, and the rest of our red wine is a click away. Pick it up at our Brooklyn store or get same-day delivery across NYC.
