Maverick Ranches is Hess's first Paso Robles Cabernet, named for the founder's maverick spirit. It's the Napa family's take on Paso's riper style, at a weeknight price.
Hess Persson Estates makes it, with Dave Guffy directing winemaking. The 2023 is 87% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Petite Sirah, aged 12 months in French oak, half of it new. Harvest ran from early October into November. It's 14.2% alcohol.
The winery describes black plum, currant and blackberry with cardamom, vanilla and cinnamon toast, then black cherry, raspberry and mulberry on a fine-grained palate, and a finish of chocolate-covered cherry and dried herbs.
For a Paso Cab under $25, this is good value. For the Hess family's Napa wine, step up to Hess Allomi.
Serve it just below room temperature with barbecue, burgers or tri-tip.
