Merus began in 1998 as a garage winery on Patchett Street in Napa, founded by Mark Herold and Erika Gottl. The name is Latin for pure, undiluted.
Bill Foley bought the brand in 2007 and, the next year, the historic Rossini winery at the base of Howell Mountain in St. Helena, where Merus is now made. It remains part of Foley Family Wines. The Cabernet comes mainly from a single vineyard in Coombsville, one of Napa's coolest areas, with volcanic soil over river cobble.
Wine Spectator called the 2016 a towering young wine, laden with pure plum.
For a cult-style Napa Cab from a small producer, buy this. For a Coombsville Cab from a bigger name, see Faust The Pact.
Now ten years old, it should be opening up. Decant it for an hour and serve it with a ribeye.
