This 2014 Mount Veeder Cabernet comes from a drought year, and only 950 cases were made. Now more than ten years old, it's the most mature Newton on our shelf.
Peter Newton, who earlier founded Sterling, started Newton Vineyard with Su Hua Newton, and LVMH became majority owner in 2001. The 2014 comes from five blocks on the steep Mount Veeder slopes. It spent 12 months in barrel by lot, then was blended and returned to barrel. The winery burned in the 2020 Glass Fire, and the brand has since been sold.
Critics describe wet earth, mushroom, dark fruit and flowers, black and red currant, and pencil shavings, with firm, grainy tannins.
For a younger vintage from the same vineyard, choose the 2018. Open the 2014 now.
Stand it up a day before and decant it off any sediment. Serve it around 62 to 64°F with roast lamb.
