Newton Vineyard was founded in 1977 by Peter Newton and his wife on Spring Mountain, near St. Helena. The September 2020 Glass Fire left only 5 of its 68 vine acres alive, and in 2025 Wine Spectator reported that Moët Hennessy had sold the estate and brand to Nick Livanos and Eric Bryan Seuthe, with new production starting from the 2025 vintage.
So the 2021 Puzzle was made before that sale. Retailer K&L lists it as 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Cabernet Franc, 9% Petit Verdot and 4% Malbec, a Cabernet-led Bordeaux-style blend. It's 14.5% alcohol.
K&L's staff describe it as dense and dark, with chocolate and mocha and a soft palate.
Against Newton The Puzzle 2009, the 2021 is a young bottle that costs less; for a Puzzle to lay down, choose the 2021.
Decant it for an hour and serve with steak, braised short ribs or lamb chops.
