Newton The Puzzle Spring Mountain District Red Blend 2009 750ml

Newton Vineyard was founded in 1977 by Peter Newton and Dr. Su Hua Newton on the hillsides of Spring Mountain, above Napa Valley. LVMH bought a majority stake in 2001, so this 2009 was made under Moët Hennessy ownership. The 2020 Glass Fire destroyed most of the estate, leaving 5 of 68 acres of vines.

The Puzzle is the estate's top Bordeaux-style blend, made from hand-selected hillside blocks and only in exceptional years. The blend changes from vintage to vintage, and the winery hasn't published the 2009 percentages, oak regime or alcohol. Chris Millard joined as winemaker in 2008, making this one of his first vintages.

The winery hasn't published a tasting note for the 2009, and after 16 years each bottle will show its own age.

Against Newton The Puzzle 2021, the 2009 is a pre-fire bottling with long cellar time behind it; for a mature Puzzle to drink now, choose the 2009.

No drinking window has been published. Decant it off any sediment and serve it with roast lamb, beef or mushroom dishes.
