Overture is the second wine of Opus One, the Oakville estate founded by Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild. It was first made in 1993.
It's made from lots that don't go into the final Opus One blend, and it gets extra time in barrel. For years it was blended across vintages; the winery calls Overture 2021 the first vintage-dated bottling of its second wine. The winery doesn't explain the V8 name on our listing, so check the bottle for the vintage or release. One recent multi-vintage release, a blend of 2018 and 2019, spent 18 months in French oak. It's 14.5% alcohol.
For a multi-vintage release, a retailer describes bright cherry, red currant, cocoa, cedar and vanilla. For the 2021, the winery describes plum, blackberry, cherry and dried rose petal with a velvety texture and powdery tannins.
Against Opus One Overture V21, this release costs about $45 less; for a taste of Opus One at a dinner party, choose this one.
Serve it with steak, lamb chops or a cheese board.
