Opus One Overture Napa Valley 2021 750ml

Overture is the second wine of Opus One Winery in Oakville, Napa Valley, made since 1993 from the same estate fruit. Earlier Overtures were non-vintage blends; Opus One calls the 2021 the first vintage-dated bottling.

Opus One's tech sheet gives the blend as 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot and 3% Merlot. Harvest ran from 31 August to 24 September 2021, the second-lowest rainfall year in estate history, with small yields and concentrated fruit. The wine had 19 days of skin contact and 19½ months in new French oak. It's sealed with a cork.

The winery describes plum, blackberry, cherry, dried rose petal and forest floor, then black currant and blueberry on the palate, powdery tannins and a coffee and dark chocolate finish.

Against Opus One Overture V8, the 2021 carries a single vintage date; for a bottle from one known year, choose the 2021.

Opus One now lists the 2021 as a library release. Decant it for an hour and serve it with steak or roast lamb.
