Taylor's was founded in 1692 and is the original company of The Fladgate Partnership. In the US the house sells its Ports as Taylor Fladgate; the producer calls this wine Taylor's Fine Tawny.
It's a young tawny with no age statement, blended from wines aged for up to three years in oak casks in Taylor's cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia, then blended a few months before bottling. It sits below the house's aged tawnies.
Taylor's describes a pale brick colour with an amber rim, ripe berry fruit, butterscotch, figs, prunes and nutty, spicy notes, and a smooth, round palate with strawberry-jam flavours.
Against Taylor Fladgate 10 Year Tawny, the Fine Tawny is younger and costs about $11 less; for an everyday tawny to pour slightly chilled, choose the Fine Tawny.
The producer says it's ready to drink and needs no decanting. Serve it slightly chilled at 12 to 16 °C as an aperitif or after dinner, with almonds, walnuts, dark chocolate, berry fruit or blue cheese.
