The 2019 growing season started wet and ended with a cool, long harvest, so Cakebread's grapes ripened slowly and evenly. Seven years on, this Napa Valley Cabernet has had time to settle.
The family-owned Rutherford winery made the 2019 from its estate ranches and long-time family growers across Napa's main Cabernet areas. Each lot was hand-picked at night and cold-soaked for two days. The blend is 88% Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Petit Verdot, Syrah and a little Cabernet Franc and Petite Sirah. It spent 17 months in French oak, half of it new. It's 14.8% alcohol.
The US marketer describes ripe blackberry and boysenberry, dark chocolate and toasty oak, a rich, smooth palate with fresh acidity and lush tannins, and a long finish with a hint of minerality.
Of the Cakebread vintages on our shelf, this is the one to open now. The 2022 needs more time.
Give it 30 minutes in a decanter and serve it with filet mignon or roast lamb.
