Château de Pez dates back to the 15th century, which makes it the oldest estate in Saint-Estèphe and one of the oldest on Bordeaux's Left Bank.
The Champagne house Louis Roederer has owned it since 1995. Its 94 planted acres sit in one continuous block of gravel over clay and limestone, and winemaker Nicolas Glumineau vinifies each plot separately in the newer cellar.
The 2020 blends 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot and 3% each of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Picking ran from 11 to 26 September, and the wine spent 12 months in oak, 35% of it new, before being bottled unfiltered.
The estate describes iris, raspberry and cocoa bean on the nose, then raspberry and cedar on a smooth, full-bodied palate with well-integrated tannins.
For Saint-Estèphe at a younger, softer stage, Le Marquis de Calon costs a little less. Pick de Pez when you want a grand vin with six years of age already behind it.
Decant it for an hour and serve it at 16–18°C (61–64°F) with a rib roast, lamb chops or duck breast.
