Château Lascombes is a Second Growth in the 1855 classification, in Margaux-Cantenac. The Lawrence family has owned it since 2022, with Axel Heinz as winemaker and CEO. In 2010 the director was Dominique Befve, with Alain Raynaud and Michel Rolland consulting.
This is the grand vin; Chevalier de Lascombes comes from satellite plots. The 2010 is 55% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot, hand-harvested, given a 30 to 35 day maceration and aged in barrel. Critics report 90% new oak. It's 14% alcohol, under cork.
James Suckling describes pinpoint but rich fruit of blackcurrants, licorice and fresh herbs, with soft, velvety tannins and a long finish. Jeb Dunnuck calls it flat-out gorgeous, and his later note finds a beautiful wine with some maturity.
Against Alter Ego de Palmer 2019, Lascombes is a classified grand vin with 15 years in bottle; for a mature Margaux to open now, choose Lascombes.
The château gives an optimal window of 2025 to 2040, as does Jeb Dunnuck. Decant it and serve with roast lamb or ribeye.
