Inglenook was established in Rutherford in 1879, in the legacy of Gustave Niebaum, and is now under the stewardship of the Coppola family. Rubicon is its estate-grown flagship.

The 2017 is 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc from estate vineyards including Cohn, Gio, Creek, Apple, Walnut, La Lomita and Lower Garden. Director of Winemaking Philippe Bascaules aged it 18 months in French oak, 75% new, and bottled it in July 2019. It's 14.1% alcohol.

The winery describes an expansive, dark-fruited core of raspberry, black cherry and cassis, "finely-polished tannins" and a refreshing finish of crème de cassis and cocoa powder. Wine Spectator calls it "a restrained style worth cellaring," and Wine Enthusiast finds it floral and well integrated.

Against Chateau St. Jean Cinq Cépages 2017, Rubicon is a single-estate Rutherford wine with more new oak; for a cellar-worthy Napa flagship, choose Rubicon.

The winery hasn't published a drinking window. Decant it for an hour or two and serve it with dry-aged steak or lamb chops.
