Red Label is the world's best-selling Scotch whisky, and Johnnie Walker built it to be mixed. The blend first appeared under the Red Label name in 1909, when the Walkers renamed their Special Old Highland whisky, and it has been the brand's entry bottle ever since.
It's brighter and spicier than the older Johnnie Walker blends: honey, pear and a little spice, with a light, smoky finish that keeps it from tasting thin once you add a mixer. It's bottled at 40%.
Buy it for the bar rail, not the sipping glass. For a whisky you'll also want to drink neat, spend a few dollars more on Black Label; for a budget blend that sips well, John Barr Reserve is worth a look.
Johnnie Walker's own suggestion is the one to follow: a tall glass of ice, one part Red Label, three parts ginger ale and a wedge of lime squeezed in.
We carry it in every size from the 50ml mini to the 1.75L. The whole range is on our Johnnie Walker page, and more bottles are under blended Scotch. Pick it up at our Brooklyn store or get same-day delivery across NYC.
