Vina Zorzal Malayeto Navarra Garnacha 2023 750ml

Malayeto is a single-vineyard Garnacha from Viña Zorzal in Fitero, in southern Navarra. It takes its name from a 2.39-hectare plot at about 520 meters, planted on stony clay, limestone and conglomerate.

It's 100% Garnacha from vines that sources put at 40 to 45 years old. For the 2023, retailer PJ Wine reports native yeasts and fermentation in concrete and stainless steel, with 10% in open-top vats, then 12 months in a 4,000-liter oak vat, used 500-liter barrels and concrete eggs. It's 14% alcohol and labeled DO Navarra.

What sets the wine apart is how it's made: old-vine Garnacha from one plot, raised in large, used wood and concrete rather than new barriques.

Against Borsao Tres Picos, Malayeto comes from a single Navarra plot; for a site-specific Garnacha, choose Malayeto.

Open it 30 minutes ahead and serve it slightly cool, around 16°C. Pour it with grilled lamb chops, roast chicken, chorizo or piquillo peppers, or with a plate of Spanish cheeses.
