Austin Hope started his label in 2000 with Rhône grapes and only made his first Cabernet in 2017. It quickly became the wine Hope Family Wines is best known for.
The 2022 is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from seven Paso Robles sub-districts, including Estrella, Geneseo, Creston, El Pomar and San Miguel. It spends 14 months in used French oak, then the blend gets two more months in mostly new French barrels. 2022 was warm, with an early September heat wave that brought harvest forward by about a week. It's 15% alcohol.
The winery describes black currant, blackberry, violet and mocha, then juicy olallieberry and cherry with cedar, clove, nutmeg and vanilla bean, and calls it luscious and modern.
It's big, ripe Paso Cabernet at its most polished. For the same region for less money, Daou is the better weeknight bottle; for a celebration, choose this.
Decant it for an hour and serve it slightly cool, around 62°F, because the alcohol shows if it's warm. A ribeye or lamb shoulder can stand up to it.
