Bota Box Merlot

Bota Box is made by Bota Box Vineyards in Manteca, California, and belongs to Delicato Family Wines. Delicato says the brand is produced at its Certified Sustainable California winery.

The Merlot comes in a 3L box and a 500ml carton, in what Bota Box calls sustainably crafted packaging. It's 13.5% alcohol.

The winery describes cherry, blackberry and sweet herbs on the nose, then black cherry, ripe plum and a hint of spice on the palate. It calls the wine medium-bodied, with mild, plush tannins.

Against Josh Cellars Merlot, Bota Box costs far less per glass and the 3L box pours for a crowd; for parties, cooking or a house red by the glass, choose Bota Box.

The winery suggests dry-aged sirloin or spaghetti Bolognese. It also works with burgers, meatballs and roast chicken. Take the 500ml carton to a picnic or a park, and keep the 3L box in the kitchen for weeknight glasses.
