El Dorado 21 Year Special Reserve is made by Demerara Distillers at Diamond, on the East Bank of the Demerara River in Guyana, from molasses rums aged at least 21 years in ex-bourbon casks. Demerara Distillers keeps some of the last working wooden stills in the world, and this blend draws on both its pot and column stills. The El Dorado range launched in 1992.
It is deep and dry for its age, with bananas Foster, leather, cigar box and baking spice, then vanilla, cocoa nib and firm oak on a long finish.
This is the bottle for a bourbon or Cognac drinker who wants a serious aged rum. It is drier and more wood-driven than El Dorado 15, which is rounder and sweeter in style; for a 21-year-old from Jamaica, compare Appleton Estate 21.
Serve it neat in a tulip glass, with a few drops of water if you like, and give it time in the glass. It is a rum for after dinner, not for mixing.
More long-aged rums are under rum. Pick it up at our Brooklyn store or get same-day delivery in Brooklyn, Manhattan & Queens.
