Herradura Blanco 46 is an unaged, 100% blue Weber agave tequila from Amatitán in Jalisco's Tequila Valley, Mexico, bottled at 46% alcohol (92 proof) in a 700ml bottle.
It comes from Casa Herradura (NOM 1119), founded in 1870 and owned by Brown-Forman. The agave is cooked in clay brick ovens, crushed with a roller mill and fermented in open-air tanks with natural yeasts, then distilled twice and bottled without any time in oak.
Herradura describes agave, herbs and citrus, with toasted and fresh agave, spice and a sweet, persistent finish. VinePair (Tim McKirdy) gives it 92 points, finding more depth and complexity than Herradura's lower-proof blanco.
Compared with Herradura Silver, which rests 45 days in oak, Blanco 46 is stronger and unaged, so the cooked agave comes through more clearly.
Sip it neat or with a splash of water, or use it to give extra backbone to a margarita or ranch water.
