James E. Pepper 1776 Straight Bourbon is a high-rye bourbon, with more than 38% rye in the mash, bottled at 50% (100 proof) without chill filtering. The James E. Pepper name goes back to a Kentucky whiskey family of the 1700s.

All that rye gives a spicy, full bourbon: vanilla, honey and chocolate with clove and pepper, and a long, dry finish. The higher proof keeps that spice alive in a stirred drink.
