Żubrówka is the Polish bison grass vodka, made by Polmos Białystok and produced commercially since 1928; it is now owned by Maspex. Bison grass contains coumarin, which has been barred from US food since 1954, so the US version is made to a coumarin-free recipe on a rye base. Each bottle still holds a blade of grass. It is bottled at 37.5%.
It tastes of fresh-cut hay, vanilla, almond and light spice, softer than most unflavored vodkas.
Nothing else on our shelf tastes like it; it is a vodka for sipping cold as well as mixing. For a classic unflavored Polish vodka, see Vesica.
The classic serve is a Szarlotka, Polish for apple pie: Żubrówka topped with apple juice over ice, with a slice of apple.
Polish drinkers often serve it ice cold, straight from the freezer, in small glasses alongside food. It is a good introduction to the flavored vodka traditions of Eastern Europe.
More vodkas are under vodka. Pick it up at our Brooklyn store or get same-day delivery across NYC.
