Calico Jack Coconut Rum

Calico Jack Coconut is a coconut-flavored rum at 21%, or 42 proof, named after the Caribbean pirate Jack Rackham. Coconut is steeped in the spirit and then filtered out. The rum comes from the Cruzan distillery on St. Croix, and Beam, which bought the brand in 2012, moved bottling to Kentucky the following year.

It is sweet and simple, with toasted coconut and sugar and almost no alcohol bite.

Calico Jack costs about half what Malibu does for a liter, at the same strength. Choose Malibu if a recipe names it; choose Calico Jack for a big batch where price matters more than the label.

Pour it over ice with pineapple juice and a squeeze of lime, or use it in a frozen Piña Colada or a party punch with orange and pineapple juice.
