Velho Barreiro Cachaca 1L

Velho Barreiro is a cachaça, Brazil's national spirit, distilled from fresh sugarcane juice rather than the molasses most rum is made from. It is produced by Tatuzinho 3 Fazendas in Rio Claro, in São Paulo state, and comes in a one-liter bottle.

It is grassy and vegetal, with fresh sugarcane, light spice and a gently sweet, earthy finish.

This is the bottle for a Caipirinha. A molasses rum tastes flatter in that drink; if you want a cane-juice spirit for a Daiquiri instead, try Barbancourt Haitian Proof White.

For a Caipirinha, cut half a lime into wedges and muddle it with two teaspoons of sugar in a rocks glass. Add two ounces of cachaça, fill the glass with crushed ice and stir. Swap the lime for passion fruit or strawberries for a fruit version, or mix cachaça with pineapple juice for a long drink.
