Concha y Toro Gravas del Maipo Syrah 2008 750ml

Gravas del Maipo is a single-vineyard Syrah from Concha y Toro. Wine Spectator reports that it debuted with the 2007 vintage under Enrique Tirado, of Don Melchor. The fruit comes from 8 hectares of the Quinta de Maipo vineyard in Buin, Alto Maipo, planted in 1967 and later grafted to Syrah.

The vineyard sits at 420 meters on the south bank of the Maipo River, with gravel, the gravas of the name, beneath a silty-clay topsoil. The 2008 is 100% Syrah, and the critic Alex Hunt notes lavish new oak.

World of Fine Wine's tasters describe dense red-black colour, cassis and black cherry, and a concentrated, voluptuous palate with structured tannins.

Against Two Hands Lily's Garden 2017, Gravas del Maipo 2008 has nine more years in bottle; for a mature, single-vineyard Chilean Syrah, choose Gravas.

This is now an aged bottle. One World of Fine Wine taster gave it at least a decade of pleasure, while another suggested drinking it by 2017. Decant it gently off any sediment and serve it at 14 to 18°C.
