Mollydooker The Boxer Shiraz 2023 is a full-bodied red wine from South Australia, made entirely from Shiraz and bottled at 15% alcohol in a 750ml screw-cap bottle.
Winemakers Sarah and Sparky Marquis founded Mollydooker in McLaren Vale in 2005; the name is Australian slang for a left-hander, and both are lefties. The 2023 Boxer comes from vineyards in McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek and is fermented and aged in American oak barrels, 40% of them new. Its “Fruit Weight”, Mollydooker's measure of how much of the palate the fruit covers, is 68%.
Mollydooker describes ripe black cherry, mocha and a hint of clove, with a soft, plummy texture and a touch of toasted oak. Ken's Wine Guide notes black cherry, cola and dark chocolate.
A big, ripe Australian Shiraz at a weeknight price, richer and fruitier than most French Syrah.
Mollydooker uses nitrogen to keep sulfites low, so give it the “Mollydooker Shake”: pour off a splash, recap, shake and open again. Serve it with burnt ends, grilled steak or lamb.
