Weingut Dr. Hermann is a VDP estate in Erden, in Germany's Mosel. It dates to 1967, when the Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben estate in Ürzig was divided and Dr. Hermann, a physician, set up his own winery. His grandson Christian Hermann runs it today.
This is the regular Kabinett from the Ürziger Würzgarten, a cru of red, iron-rich volcanic rhyolite, sandstone and slate. The importer says the vines are 40 to 80 years old, and one retailer notes fermentation in stainless steel. It's a fruity Kabinett rather than a dry one, at just 7.5% alcohol, under screw cap.
The importer describes stone fruit, red berry and spice. Wine Advocate, quoted by one retailer, finds it flinty, with iron and crushed slate, light and saline, with great finesse and serious tension.
Against Dr. Loosen Dr. L Riesling, this is a single-cru Kabinett from ungrafted old vines; for a Mosel Riesling with a named vineyard behind it, choose the Dr. Hermann.
Serve it well chilled, around 45°F as one retailer suggests, with spicy Asian dishes, smoked fish or pork with apples.
