Oyster Bay was one of the first New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs to reach the world, and its debut 1990 vintage won the Marquis de Goulaine Trophy for the best Sauvignon Blanc anywhere. The brand belongs to Delegat, a family-controlled winery with vineyards in Marlborough and Hawke's Bay.
Each vineyard block is picked and handled separately, then the grapes are crushed and gently pressed. The clear juice ferments long, slow and cool, and the wine is bottled straight away to keep it fresh. There's no oak and no reserve tier. Oyster Bay was a founding member of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand.
The winery describes a pale straw-green color, assertive passionfruit and tropical fruit with citrus, and a crisp, zesty finish.
Against Kim Crawford, Oyster Bay is a touch leaner and more citrusy; for oysters and shellfish, choose Oyster Bay.
Serve it well chilled with oysters, grilled fish or a goat cheese salad.
