El Coto de Rioja Coto de Imaz Reserva 2021 is a dry red wine from Rioja in northern Spain, made from 100% Tempranillo and bottled at 14% alcohol in a 750ml bottle.
El Coto de Rioja was founded in 1970 in Oyón, in Rioja Alavesa, and today is one of the largest vineyard owners in the region, with estates across Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental. Its Reserva and Gran Reserva wines carry the Coto de Imaz name. This Reserva is fermented in stainless steel, aged 18 months in American oak barrels and then rested in bottle before release.
Expect a cherry-red color, ripe red fruit, vanilla, cocoa and sweet spice on the nose, and a dry, medium-bodied palate with firm but velvety tannins. James Suckling and Vinous both give the 2021 91 points.
If you like the classic, oak-aged style of Rioja, this is a lot of Reserva for the price, and it will keep improving for a few more years.
Serve it with roast lamb, grilled steak, game, chorizo or aged Manchego.
