Marques de Riscal Rioja Reserva 2021 750ml

Herederos del Marqués de Riscal has made wine in Rioja since 1858. The producer calls its Reserva a benchmark Rioja red, sold in more than 100 countries.

The 2021 is a DOCa Rioja Reserva made from Tempranillo with a little Graciano. The US importer Vintus reports about two years in American oak with a small share of French oak, then at least a year in bottle before release. It's 14.5% alcohol.

Vintus describes "expressive aromas of licorice, cinnamon and black pepper," with a fresh, supple palate, polished tannins and a balsamic finish. Wine Enthusiast calls it "poised, classic, and linear," and Vinous says the cooler vintage lends detail and lift.

Against El Coto Rioja Crianza, the Riscal Reserva has longer oak and bottle aging and the structure to keep; for a roast or a bottle to cellar, choose the Riscal.

The producer suggests serving it at 16 to 18°C with ham, mild cheeses, roasts and grilled meats. Jeb Dunnuck calls it a classic, ready to go another 10 to 15 years.
