Marqués de Cáceres makes this Reserva under the DOCa Rioja from selected old vineyards in Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa.
The blend is led by Tempranillo, and Vino.com adds Garnacha and Graciano. The vines grow mainly on clay-limestone soils. The producer's Reserva notes describe 20 months in French oak, split equally among new, one-year-old and two-year-old barrels, with malolactic partly in barrel and partly in steel, then at least two years in bottle before release. It's 14.5% alcohol.
The producer describes deep, brilliant crimson color, a nose of noble wood, light spice, vanilla and cocoa with dark fruit, liquorice and forest floor, and a full-bodied, refined palate with berry fruit and toasty notes. James Suckling notes coffee beans, roasted mushrooms, black fruit and dried spices.
Against Marqués de Cáceres Gran Reserva 2019, the Reserva costs ten dollars less; for the house style at a weeknight price, choose the Reserva.
Marqués de Cáceres recommends serving it at 17°C. Pour it with roast lamb, grilled chorizo or Manchego.
